Mixed Method Questionnaire Evaluation using Web Probing at the National Center for Health Statistics
Over the last half decade, web probing has emerged as a question evaluation method in its own right—complementing instead of replacing methods such as cognitive interviewing. While multiple forms of this technique exist, all attempt to capture in one way or another the ways in which respondents interpret and respond to survey items. Depending on the type of web probes a researcher employs and the sample used, the probe findings can then be used for subgroup analyses or extrapolation to a larger population.
This seminar will discuss the evolution of web probing and its similarities and differences to more traditional question evaluation techniques. Additionally, a couple of case studies from the National Center for Health Statistics’ Research and Development Survey (RANDS) program will be presented and discussed, including a evaluations of e-cigarette use and telemedicine access during the COVID-19 pandemic items.
